Dear Dutchessa

Dear DutchessaMoving is said to be the number one cause of stress, even for highly skilled and adapted human beings. Let alone moving to Holland, and then having to learn the language! Dutchessa is happy to share her tips, do’s and don’ts and general knowhow of dealing with what are the lovely quirks of The Netherlands. So feel free to send in your questions to “Dear Dutchessa”.

Dear Dutchessa,

How come it’s so hard to get in touch with Dutch people socially? Even after drinking and going out for a whole night, I’ve found it’s really difficult to reconnect. People say “Het was gezellig! Let’s stay in touch” But they never do. And I end up feeling like I’ve been ditched after a bad date. What’s the deal here?

Warm regards, Lucy.

Dear Lucy,

To be honest, I have to say: I have no idea. But I know what you mean, I’ve experienced it myself. It’s a social mystery wrapped inside the enigma that is the Dutch collective mind. But the positive thing to all this is: you don’t ever, ever, ever have to take it personally! It’s just one of those (Dutch) things… However, if you áre interested in building some real and lasting friendships, then maybe a night on the town just won’t cut it to begin with! Go to a place where you will meet Dutch people that you share a common interest with, connect on Facebook and charm your way into their social life. Easy as pie!

Embrace the adventure! Dutchessa
